Had a great time in DC with MH, Kuf, Kwame Darko and Watermelon. It’s great to play with a band as versatile as Watermelon – who can play backup for two different MCs and then go into their own set of originals. They even covered “Get Lucky” by Daft Punk at this gig and, yeah, Jules was amazing. Her chemistry with Stewie on stage is really incredible, and their harmonies are locked in like a third time felon.
Kwame is also an incredible story – somewhat new to me, but pulling a great audience and really connecting with his fan base. He has a great voice – rich and deep – and I’ve heard this track he did with MH (unreleased) called “Drink” which is just incredible. He reminds me a little bit of the rapper on “Pound on My Muffin” but in a good way – almost like a Big Sean.
This was also a fun show because of a dynamic set back and forth with MH and Kuf. Kuf had his DJ “Golden Spiral” and I DJd for MH. There were some really cool segments where Golden Spiral would build a beat using his APC40 and Ableton and I would solo over it by scratching on my turntables, and then I would build a beat using my Maschine Mikro and he would solo over it using the APC40 as a kind of virtuoso scratch box – with samples loaded in.
